I am so pissed.
I am so angry at this shop I was consigning with.
I sent in my items around last June.
For months I hear nothing from the shopowner. No updates on what has sold, nada. I am not very bothered by this, I check in with her via email from time to time but am never given any actual totals or details on the status of my items.

Finally, it has been almost a YEAR since I sent out 10 wallets and 5 necklaces to her shop, and I want that inventory back, even if it hasn't sold. I email her and request it returned, and she agrees. A month passes. I email her again to ask what's up. She says oops, my bad, I'll send it out asap. I'm like fine, OK. At least this will all be over with.

I finally get my package in the mail today. There is a sales list with a check attached for the amount of 2 wallets. However, on the actual sales list, there are 2 wallets ... AND A NECKLACE listed as sold. The necklace isn't included in the total though. I'm like, wtf? Did she forget to pay me, or did my necklace get effing stolen??? Still, I figure I can just email her and sort it out, no big deal.

Then I open up my package to retrieve my inventory. The 4 necklaces are in a giant, tangled bunch which takes me an hour to untangle. The kicker though? She put a barcode sticker on EVERY. SINGLE. ONE OF MY WALLETS. My wallets are covered with tape, like a vinyl type covering. The stickers left a sticky residue on EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY WALLETS. How am I gonna sell them with sticky crap all over the wallet??? I can't remove the sticker stuff all the way. I am so mad. I don't even want to do freaking consigment ever again.

Consigning with brick and mortars can be tricky especially when they're not local and you can't really get an idea of how your work is being displayed/represented, who knows if your stuff isn't shoved in some back corner or even on the sales floor! It's getting harder and harder to find good ones and unfortunately alot have been closing. Also a lot of them don't seem to have the artists in mind.... Don't get me wrong it can be a good tool to spread the word about your work but from my experience it can be a hassle and you don't really get much in return. Is this by any chance the store in Boston (you can email me about it if you like) brisana581 @ yahoo

There are a couple of ways to remove sticker residue, depending on the surface you're removing it from.
1. First, try to gently lift the residue with tape.
2. If that doesn't work, try using a pencil eraser to gently rub it away.
3. If the surface can take it without damage, moisten a q-tip or cotton ball with alcohol or nail polish remover and rub gently.

I'm so sorry this happened. It's hard to find good people to do business with. Hang in there, and keep looking!

I am so thankful I haven't had any consignment horror stories, though I have only consigned in my town thus far (partly due to fear of not having the ability to keep an eye on things). Almost all the jewelry I consign is designed with sterling silver and 14k gold-filled findings, vintage pieces, gemstones and freshwater pearls... many pieces are limited or one of a kind. I would be absolutely horrified if something like that happened to me-it could be a serious financial loss. I couldn't imagine not consigning (at least at this point in my career). There is one store in particular where my jewelry sells fantastically and I almost always end up making $200-$400 a month there (that's after they take their 40%). Consignment is such a great way to bring in money, but it definitely can be risky. I am so sorry you had to go through with that! Was the store new?

I never do consignment because it's just not worth the hassles (in my opinion).

To remove the sticky stuff is there some kind of orange oil product you can buy over there? Here in Australia we have a couple of different ones... one called 'Goo Remover' and I can't remember the other one's name but they work like magic. They smell all lovely a citrus like too. :)

similar to what kittycat_black suggested, try "goo gone." it looks like this: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=81908&aid=336064&aparam=goo%20gone&scinit1=goo%20gone
it will get the gunk off with no problem. that stuff can remove all types of crap from things, including gum. GET IT, trust me.
